Dear Mac Families,

Some of our students have planned a walk-out in protest of McCallum’s handling of reports of bullying, harassment and alleged sexual assault tomorrow at 2 p.m. This is an important topic to discuss with your child, which is why I am inviting our students to “walk-in” to a conversation with me at 1:45 p.m. after lunch in the library.

During this discussion, we’ll talk about how we as an administration respond to reports of alleged sexual harassment and assault, how we’re planning to educate our community around these topics and how we can connect victims of sexual assault to resources and support. All students who choose to participate in the discussion will be excused from class, however, any missed assignments will need to be turned in.

Students who participate in the walk-out will not be excused from class. Austin ISD Police will be onsite to ensure the safety of all students who are walking out of class. Additional counseling will also be available for students.

While it’s important to have this conversation with your children, we know it’s a necessary conversation for our entire campus community. I will host a McCallum family meeting tomorrow night at 6 p.m. to discuss our approach to reports of bullying and alleged sexual assault and harassment.

Please know that we cannot discuss specific instances or allegations in this meeting. If you have specific concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. I am here to help.

Thank you,

Nicole Griffith
