Visual Arts Scholastic Event
McCallum art students participate in the Texas Art Education Association/Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) every year.
VASE is a state-wide curricular opportunity for high school art students. This event affords students the opportunity to develop creative works of art and to discuss and analyze ther artworks with professionals in art.
Each student is scheduled for an eight-minute private interview with an art professional. During this valuable teaching time the students discuss their artwork, explaining their creative process, media, and techniques while using an established criteria. Art students are placed into divisions according to art expereince and the number of years they have studied art. Medals are awarded to any student who attains the established standard and receives a rating of four.
At the conclusion of the regional events, artworks from each division are selected by the entire panel of jurors to advance to the state meet.
Scholastic Art and Writing Award
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have conducted a national assessment annually since 1923 to reward the creative achievements of students in grades 7 through 12 and to recognize excellence in teaching. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc, a not-for-profit organization, was formed in 1994 to administer the awards and to expand the scholarship opportunities for students identified through the programs.
Judging and Awards
Of the more than 250,000 students who submitted their work to The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, 50,000 were honored for their creative abilities in their own communities through a group of 80 regional partners that sponsor local Awards programs.
Award-winning work from these regional competitions was sent to New York City to be scrutinized by panels of distinguished artists, writers, educators, and other art and writing professionals. Judges on the national level are among the most well-known and respected artists and writers in America
On the national level, individual works are eligible to receive Pinnacle, Gold or Silver Awards in sixteen art categories and eight writing categories. Pinnacle Awards are granted to the single most exemplary work in each category. Gold Awards are presented to outstanding works in each category. Silver Awards are the next level of recognition, and are granted to works that demonstrate exceptional merit.
Portfolio Awards are also available to seniors for a body or art or writing. Portfolio Award winners may receive cash prizes and scholarships to colleges throughout the United States.
