Director of Bands
Carol Nelson is Director of Bands at the McCallum High School Fine Arts Academy in Austin, Texas. She received her bachelor’s (music education) and master’s (applied conducting) degrees from the University of Texas in Austin, where she was a graduate assistant for the Longhorn Band. In addition, she also received her trumpet performance certificate from the University of Texas.
Among her many honors, Ms. Nelson has been awarded the University Interscholastic League’s Denius Excellence Award for the state of Texas, Teacher of the Year at McCallum High School, the “M” Award at McCallum High School, and most recently the Texas Bandmasters Association Meritorius Award for 2011.
Ms. Nelson is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association and Phi Beta Mu. The 2015-16 school year celebrates her 36th year at McCallum.
Matt Ehlers is Associate Director of Bands at McCallum High School in Austin, TX. Originally from Seward, Nebraska, he received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of North Texas in 2006, were he studied percussion under Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Paul Rennick, and Ed Smith. Ehlers conducts the Symphonic Band, beginner, intermediate, and advanced steel pan classes, high school percussion ensembles, and a beginning percussion class at Lamar Middle School.
Under his directrion, the “Knights of Steel” (McCallum’s steel drum band) has performed at the 2006 Percussive Arts Society International Convention and the 2007 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. Matt is an active composer, performer and clinician. He is the co-coordinator of a youth steel drum camp in Austin during the summer.
Mr. Rudy directs the Concert Band and Color Guard, assists with the Marching Band, and teaches AP Music Theory and Piano within the Fine Arts Academy. Now in his 25th year of teaching, he remains active as a private instructor and accompanist in the Austin area.
