Curriculum

 

The following is a sampling of topics students will study in their freshman year as a Cinematic Arts major:

Storytelling / Screenwriting: Write about life events; share stories; introduce characters
Learn about, write and share tag lines
Understand story architecture & critical components; learn about the role of conflict
The Screenplay: Learn components of a screenplay; learn about beats: do table reads
Use dialogue to help define characters & move the story
Develop characters; understand the types of characters; act out scripts
Examine various film types
Write a screenplay
Create a story board
Understand shot types
Learn camera movement
Learn camera functions, lenses, exposure, angles, shot types, and time compression
Intro to production sound: recorders, microphones, using a boom
Produce, film, edit, and critique a student film

Program Breakdown

Prescribed Course Plan and Requirement

  • Cinematic Production in 9th grade
  • Acting in 9th or 10th grade
  • Advanced Cinematic Production in 10th grade
  • Technical Theatre in 10th or 11th grade
  • A/V Club: 50% minimum participation 9th – 12th grade
  • Practicum I in 11th grade
  • Practicum II in 12th grade
  • Senior capstone project in 12th grade
